The world was in shock when news broke out that 230 die in nightclub named “Kiss” which is allegedly operating illegally in Santa Maria, southern Brazil.
Citing multiple sources, Mail Online reports that an estimated 2,000 people, mostly teenagers with ages between 16 and 20 years old, were in the party place when the incident happened.
The real cause of the blaze has not been determined but there were reports it started when the crowded nightclub’s ceiling, which was partly made of acoustic and soundproofing materials, caught fire after fireworks were set off while a band was performing.
Authorities reportedly said the victims died either of suffocation or stampede. Some witnesses claimed that the club’s bouncers, who were initially clueless of what was happening inside, tried to stop people from escaping inferno because they were concerned of the bills payments.
Upon realizing how serious the fire was, the security personnel purportedly helped people get out of the establishment.
Initial investigation showed the nightclub’s fire extinguishers were not working and its “Exit” signs leading to the toilets caused confusion among fifty individuals who were trapped and died there.
Of the total number of victims, 120 were men and 112 were women, police reportedly said.
