Police officers found an 8-year-old girl locked in a wooden cage inside a home in New Mexico. She was left alone unattended by a woman identified as Cindy Patriarchias and her boyfriend, Edmond Gonzales.
The Associated Press reports the girl is suffering from microcephaly, a neurodevelopmental disorder in which the circumference of the head is abnormally smaller than average for a person’s age and sex.
Cindy and Edmond reportedly sent their children to school and proceeded to a movie house. It was Cindy’s estranged husband who informed police about the girl’s miserable condition.
They were only able to enter the mobile home when Cindy and Edmond arrived after an hour. Deputies reportedly discovered a large homemade wooden cage, about 2 1/2 feet wide and 4 feet tall, with the girl in it. She was brought to New Mexico’s child protection agency.
The 33-year-old Cindy, who allegedly tried to adopt the child, was charged with “negligently causing child abuse” while Edmond was charged with “negligently permitting child abuse.”
