Globe, Smart iPhone 5 now support LTE

Rival telecommunications companies Globe and Smart announced Tuesday that iPhone 5 users can now avail their respective LTE service with the release of iOS 6.1., the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system.

“Good morning Globe iPhone 5 users! We have good news! It now supports LTE! Update your phone to Enjoy!” reads Globe Telecom’s status update on Facebook.

The company said its LTE service is currently available in Makati, Eastwood, Katipunan, Diliman, Meralco Avenue, Wack-Wack, Ortigas Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Binondo, Cebu and Boracay.

Meanwhile, Smart Executive Vice President and Wireless Consumer Division Head Emmanuel Lorenzana said “subscribers of Smart iPhone 5 postpaid plans with unlimited data can now get download speeds that are up to 20 times faster than the usual 3G connection on their mobile device.”

Although he did not specify the coverage areas, Lorenzana said there’s a “growing number of LTE zones in Metro Manila and in key cities in different parts of the country.”

He announced that LTE is free until April 30, 2013 for Smart iPhone 5 users signed up on iPhone Plans 999 and 2499 and Unlidata Plans 1500, 2000, and 3000.

To download iOS 6.1 over-the-air, go to the iPhone’s Settings menu and click on General > Software Update. Hit “Download and Install” and follow the on-screen instructions, Smart posted online. Alternatively, iOS 6.1 may be applied via iTunes by connecting the iPhone 5 to a Mac or a PC.

LTE is ideal for downloading movies in minutes, lag-free gaming, ultra-fast surfing, buffer-free video streaming, and mission-critical Internet use because of its low latency and fast download speeds, the telco added.

Future Pinoy scientists, a Museum of Natural History

Michael Purugganan, when he was an elementary student at Union Science Elementary School in Malate, used to sneak into the National Science Development Board premises, where he would spend hours in a small museum.  "It just fascinated me. I just wanted to learn more about these things and what these people were doing there," Purruganan told GMA News Online.  "That was really what inspired me to become a scientist," said Purugganan, who is currently the Dean for Science at New York University and a world leader in evolutionary and ecological genomics.   With a new museum in the works, more young Filipinos may be inspired to become scientists. In a couple of years, the Philippines will have its own world class Museum of Natural History, showcasing endemic plants and animals that can be found in the country, according to a report on State of the Nation on January 23. Museums bridge the past and present, but the government believes these can also meet...
