'It's Showtime' beats 'Wowowillie'

MANILA, Philippines -- ABS-CBN's noontime variety program "It's Showtime" posted a wide lead over its new rival show aired on TV5 last Monday.

According to the latest data of the multinational market research group Kantar Media, the first episode of the noontime show "Wowillie" only garnered 6.5% in national TV ratings on January 28. "It's Showtime," on the other hand, registered a nationwide rating of 12.3% on the same day.
The Kapamilya noontime show recently launched its new segments -- including the celebrity edition of the talent competition "Bida Kapamilya," the celebrity look-alike contest "Kalokalike" and the man-versus-machine showdown "Makina Matibay."
Meanwhile, another ABS-CBN program dominated nationwide ratings last Monday, when it aired its pilot episode during the Primetime Bida block
The "kilig-serye" starring Angeline Quinto, Sam Milby and Paulo Avelino, "Kahit Konting Pagtingin," turned in a nationwide rating of 25.5%, also according to Kantar Media. Its rival program aired on GMA-7, "Forever," only managed to earn 12% in national TV rating.
Last Friday, yet another Kapamilya program made a big splash in the ratings game as it aired its final episode.
"Aryana," which stars Ella Cruz as the teen mermaid, ended on a high note on January 25. It was the overall third most watched program on Friday, with a nationwide rating of 31.6%.
Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes, more than AGB Nielsen's 1,980 homes that are only based in urban areas. Kantar Media’s panel represents 100% of the total Philippine TV viewing population, while AGB Nielsen reportedly represents only 57% of the Philippine TV viewing population.

Future Pinoy scientists, a Museum of Natural History

Michael Purugganan, when he was an elementary student at Union Science Elementary School in Malate, used to sneak into the National Science Development Board premises, where he would spend hours in a small museum.  "It just fascinated me. I just wanted to learn more about these things and what these people were doing there," Purruganan told GMA News Online.  "That was really what inspired me to become a scientist," said Purugganan, who is currently the Dean for Science at New York University and a world leader in evolutionary and ecological genomics.   With a new museum in the works, more young Filipinos may be inspired to become scientists. In a couple of years, the Philippines will have its own world class Museum of Natural History, showcasing endemic plants and animals that can be found in the country, according to a report on State of the Nation on January 23. Museums bridge the past and present, but the government believes these can also meet...
